In-vitro fertilisation testing is a widely used fertility treatment that helps individuals and couples overcome various fertility challenges, including issues with egg production, sperm quality, or unexplained infertility.

The IVF process involves several stages, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilisation, embryo culture, and embryo transfer. Each step requires careful planning and medical expertise, which can make the process feel overwhelming. Once you know what to expect, it can provide clarity and help you make informed decisions.

Here, we explore the typical steps in IVF treatment at our Hyderabad clinic and understand how each phase is designed to maximise your chances of success.

Step 1: Initial consultation and testing

The IVF journey begins with a detailed consultation with skilled fertility specialists. The medical team reviews your health and reproductive history and discusses your fertility objectives.

Medical history review helps understand health concerns, previous pregnancies, or infertility issues. Physical evaluation may include pelvic ultrasound and hormone blood tests to evaluate ovarian health and egg reserve. Based on test results, a tailored IVF treatment strategy is developed.

The initial consultation helps set clear expectations and provides a roadmap for your IVF journey.

Step 2: Stimulating the ovaries

Medication is used to stimulate the ovaries to produce several eggs. This increases the number of eggs that can be fertilised and improves the likelihood of success.

This stage usually lasts around 10–12 days. Regular blood tests and ultrasounds monitor follicle growth. The objective is to promote the production of multiple mature eggs.

Step 3: Collecting the eggs

Once the eggs have reached maturity, the egg retrieval procedure collects them from the ovaries for fertilisation.

The procedure is minimally invasive and performed under light sedation. A needle guided by ultrasound retrieves eggs through the vaginal wall. It usually takes 20–30 minutes and is done with patient comfort in mind.

Step 4: Fertilising the eggs

After retrieving the eggs, they are fertilised in the laboratory using one of two techniques.

Traditional IVF allows eggs and sperm to remain together in a laboratory dish so fertilisation can occur naturally. ICSI involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg and is often used in cases of male infertility or previous fertilisation difficulties.

Step 5: Monitoring and selecting embryos

After fertilisation, embryos are carefully cultured and monitored for several days to assess which ones have the highest potential for development.

This phase usually lasts 3–5 days. Embryos are assessed based on appearance, growth rate, and overall health. The most viable embryos are selected for transfer.

Step 6: Transferring the embryo

The last stage of IVF involves placing the developed embryo into the uterus so implantation can occur. Doctors perform this step with a gentle and minimally invasive technique.

A thin, flexible catheter is inserted through the cervix to carefully position one or more selected embryos inside the uterus. Most patients feel little to no pain, although slight cramping may occur.

Implantation success depends on factors such as embryo quality, the woman’s age, and the condition of the uterus.

Step 7: Pregnancy testing and monitoring

After embryo transfer, pregnancy testing and close monitoring begin. About 10–14 days after transfer, an hCG blood test checks for pregnancy. Once pregnancy is confirmed, ultrasounds monitor early development and healthy implantation.

The IVF journey at our clinic is designed to be transparent, comfortable, and outcome-driven. From consultation to pregnancy testing, every step is performed with care, precision, and advanced technology.
